Let’s start with the tuition fees: each university can charge up to 9000 pounds a year but, as an EU citizen, help is available depending on where you choose to study in the UK.
- In Scotland, some courses are paid for by the Scottish government, if your chosen course is not covered then you will have to pay 1,820 pounds a year.
- In Wales, you can take out a repayable student loan for the first 3,500 – 4,000 pounds, the Welsh government pays the remainder for you in the form of a grant which you do not have to repay.
- In England and Northern Ireland, you are entitled to a repayable student loan for the full amount.
These student loans are not means-tested, all undergraduates are entitled to them regardless of parents’ salary. You only start to repay them when your salary exceeds 21,000 pounds a year, if you work in the UK. If you return to Greece to work, the threshold is 17,000 pounds and you will pay from 160 pounds a month. You will be expected to pay 9% of anything you earn over that amount annually. If, for any reason, your salary drops below 21,000 pounds again, repayments are stopped. Moreover, any outstanding debt remaining after 30 years is written off.
Scholarships and Bursaries
Each university has its own scholarships for high-achieving students, and bursaries for students from low income families. These grants are not repayable and Stepping Stone will make every effort to secure as many as possible for eligible students.
